(Updates with analyst comment in third paragraph.)

Feb. 28 (Bloomberg) -- Subaru, a unit of Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd., was named top automaker in Consumer Reports magazine's annual rankings as Honda Motor Co., last year's leader, fell to fourth.

Subaru received 75 of 100 points based on the scores of its seven U.S. models, Consumer Reports said in results released today at the National Press Club in Washington. Subaru Brings Surgical Steel to the RWD Knife Fight

Two days after the official unveiling of the all-new BRZ sports coupe at the Tokyo Motor Show, Subaru invited a small group of select U.S. journalists for a quick test drive of the 2013 Subaru BRZ at the Subaru Kenkyu Center (SKC) two hours north of Tokyo.

First Drive: 2013 Subaru XV Crosstrek

Having just returned from the press launch of the new 2013 Subaru XV Crosstrek, I can tell you two things with certainty. The first is that if you haven't seen the Tuscan countryside in late fall, you should put it on your bucket list. The weather is crisp, but the impossibly perfect winding roads zip past wineries and farmland, lined with fire orange leaves, lush greenery, and people just as colorful from a cultural standpoint. The second is that the Subaru XV, despite being 'just a lifted Impreza,' is a very cool car.

Here's the skinny: at its…

2013 Subaru BRZ from Car and Driver

2013 Subaru BRZ

Hype, validated: This rear-drive Subaru has the goods.

Some things just don't make sense. Why is the food at Outback Steakhouse mostly Cajun-style? Why can't Jennifer Aniston find true love? And why would Subaru and Toyota, two companies whose fortunes are built on mainstream sedan sales, collaborate on a rear-drive sports car?

The latter question is a bit easier to answer from the Subaru BRZ…
