Day One-
David Higgins and Craig Drew attacked the first set of stages at the Rally in the 100 Acre Wood, but had a frustrating day ending up 20 seconds behind race leader Ken Block. Piloting the #75 WRX STI, Higgins and Drew won 4 of 8 stages. However, due to a Rally America rule that does not allow competitors to average more than 80mph, 12 of the seconds gained were not counted. Anyone exceeding an 80mph average speed will be assigned the time for 80mph. Additionally, a flat tire on Stage 5 cost the duo another 15 seconds. With over 70 miles of competitive stages remaining for Saturday, Higgins and Drew are confident they can climb to the top of the podium and are eager to continue the fight.
Teammates Travis Pastrana and Chrissie Beavis had a great day getting up to speed and adjusting to each other in the #199 Subaru WRX STI. Most drivers and co-drivers have worked together for years and it always takes time to build confidence and speed. If today is any indication it seems Travis and Chrissie are on a great path. They ended Day 1 fourth overall, a minute out of third place. Given a new much faster car than Pastrana drove in the past, a new co-driver, and an injured foot nobody could ask for more. It's been awesome to see #199 back in the forest and the fans are loving it! Check back tomorrow for the final results.
Day 2-
Under mostly sunny skies and unseasonably warm temperatures, Day 2 of the Rally in the 100 Acre Wood got underway. Spectators were out in droves filling spectator locations making access impossible in a timely manner. The #199 Subaru WRX STI with Travis Pastrana and Co-Driver Chrissie Beavis ran a flawless event and secured second overall. An impressive accomplishment, both Travis and Chrissie should be proud of their efforts. There is no question their speed will increase and they'll be contending for event wins in no time. At the finish celebration in downtown Salem, Missouri, there was a massive gathering. As racers were positioning for the champagne spray, it was extraordinary to see rally cars navigating through a sea of excited fans.
David Higgins and Craig Drew were not as fortunate. Eager to take the lead they charged hard down Stage 9 - the first of the day. However, they quickly developed an issue with their engine and were forced to retire at the end of the stage. It was a bitter moment for Higgins & Drew. They have been on the podium continuously for the past 22 Rally America events - a stunning accomplishment and a testament to the durability and performance of the Subaru WRX STI.
The 2014 Rally America Series continues with the Oregon Trail Rally at the end of April. Hope to see you there!
