By Tom Krisher, AP Auto Writer | Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) -- Subaru is coming out with a gas-electric hybrid crossover SUV for the crunchy granola crowd that wants to save fuel but still haul kayaks to the river.

The Japanese brand, which specializes in all-wheel-drive vehicles, unveils the 2014 XV Crosstrek Hybrid on Thursday at the New York International Auto Show.

The company's first gas-electric hybrid gets somewhat better gas mileage than the conventional Crosstrek and has stop-start technology that shuts down…

Brake Override System

The Brake Override System (BOS) is an active safety feature first introduced on all 2012 Impreza 2.0i models and will be standard equipment on all 2013 Subaru vehicles, starting with the new 2013 BRZ. Test Drive: Subaru BRZ is exotic, affordable (By James R. Healey, USA TODAY)

Subaru's 2013 BRZ sports coupe, on sale late April, is such a ball that you seldom notice the few aggravations.

And because Toyota's Scion FR-S is the same car, furbelowed a little differently, it should be as sublime.

The twin sports coupes were jointly developed by Toyota and Subaru. Toyota, known for bland styling, handled the look - and did a wonderful job.

Subaru contributed the chassis…

2013 Subaru XV Crosstrek (from Top Speed)

Subaru has always made good use of this market and has a nice following of customers. Lately, though, it seems like Subaru is really attempting to gain an edge in new markets. First, it releases the BRZ, the Japanese automaker's first true sports car since the SVX thankfully vanished in 1997, and now it is prepared to unveil the 2013 XV Crosstek, a compact crossover SUV, at the 2012 New York Auto Show starting…

Only 6000 Subaru BRZ Coupes Headed to U.S. for 2013, Pre-Orders Being Accepted (from Car and Driver)

Driving purists of America, act fast: It seems just 6000 Subaru BRZ sports cars will be allocated to the U.S. for the 2013 model year. The specific number comes to us from a Subaru dealer; the automaker's consumer web site merely states that the rear-drive-only BRZ will be built in "extremely limited quantities."

When asked for comment, Subaru representatives wouldn't confirm the figure…

First Drive: 2013 Subaru BRZ from Motor Trend

Subaru Brings Surgical Steel to the RWD Knife Fight

Two days after the official unveiling of the all-new BRZ sports coupe at the Tokyo Motor Show, Subaru invited a small group of select U.S. journalists for a quick test drive of the 2013 Subaru BRZ at the Subaru Kenkyu Center (SKC) two hours north of Tokyo.

After revealing that the BRZ name stands for Boxer Rear Drive Zenith, and plying us with all manner of technical specifications, Subaru P.R. released us on a short course that included a high-speed oval, twisty handling track, and…

First Drive: 2013 Subaru XV Crosstrek

Having just returned from the press launch of the new 2013 Subaru XV Crosstrek, I can tell you two things with certainty. The first is that if you haven't seen the Tuscan countryside in late fall, you should put it on your bucket list. The weather is crisp, but the impossibly perfect winding roads zip past wineries and farmland, lined with fire orange leaves, lush greenery, and people just as colorful from a cultural standpoint. The second is that the Subaru XV, despite being 'just a lifted Impreza,' is a very cool car.

Here's the skinny: at its…
